ASHLEY WALK township was formed by an order of the Poor Law Board, dated the 23rd November, 1868, out of the following places, formerly extra-parochial, in or adjoining the New Forest, part of Godshill, Godshill Wood, Godshill Inclosure, Ashley Walk, Ashley Lodge, Mudmore, Ogdens, Amberwood, Eyeworth Lodge, Telegraph Toll-gate, Miller's Ford and Greenhouse Farm, in the union of Fordingbridge. The river Avon bounds it on the west. Godshill is 2 miles east of Fordingbridge. Here are the remains of an English encampment, supposed to have been formed by Cerdic, who landed in 495. On one side the hill is perpendicular; on the other three it is encompassed by a double trench. The area is 8,471 acres; and the population in 1871 was 277.
