BRADING
Brading - full titled the 'Kinges Towne of Bradynge' is one of the most interesting and also one of the oldest towns on the island. This ancient port was once a hive of activity and its first Royal Charter was granted by Edward I in 1285, the Bronze Age people found the port ideal and so die the Romans when they came here, for a large Roman Villa built in 300AD was found here in 1880 and it is said to be one of the finest examples of its kind in the country. It has mosaic covered floors and underground heating,

The parish church is reputed to have been built in the 12th century and is also one of the oldest on the island. This is also suppose to be where Wilfred preached his first sermon after sailing from Selsey to convert the Jutes on the island and it has remained a place for pilgrims ever since.

There have been many changes over the years and some of the more modern attractions include the Lilliput Museum of Antique Dolls and Toys and the ever popular Brading Wax Museum in the Ancient Rectory Mansion, it even had a chamber of horrors when I was a child and I loved going there while on holiday just to have a scare. In those days we used to go on the old steam railway which covered the whole of the island. the Mansion is said to be the oldest house on the island and was built before the Battle of Hastings i n1066.

Two other large houses are nearby, they are Nunwell House and Morton manor.

The 800 year old church and two of its original consecration crosses still remain though the town goes back even further and there are three statues of a family that also go back 800 years and the remains of a house that is another 800 years older still. The tower is about 700 years old and there is not another like it on the island for it has arches in so that during Sunday processions around the church in medieaval times the processions could pass through with hindrance and the top of the tower were beacon irons which have been removed an put in the porch
