Almer

Almer which is a tiny village on the Dorchester to Wimborne road lies six miles from Wimborne and also six miles to the southwest of Blandford, an it derived its name from the Saxon Aelmere or Eel Lake because there was once a lake here, today it has practically dried up.

The village church dedicated to St Mary stands by an attractive farmhouse and the churchyard contains an old preaching cross which is said to be nearly one and a half thousand years old. St Mary's is 12th century and was restored in 1907 and a new oak roof added.

Almer has an eight foot wall that stretches for seven miles and links the arched entrances to Charborough Park.

The village pub stands at the western end of the village and is called The World's End once it was described as a "bleak alehouse where you were only welcome if the landlord liked you" This is said to be the oldest pub in Dorset until a fire devastated it several years ago. Luckily the Inn has been fully restored since those days and with its cosy lounges it is renowned for its tasty meals
