| Batcombe |
| Hiding under the northern slope of the Dorset Downs
is the tiny village of Batcombe with its church dedicated to St Mary
Magdalen which can be found when descending the steep Batcombe Hill, all
that is here really is the church a handful of cottages and a thatched
farmhouse.
There are tales relating to the village though, one is that a squire who was known locally as Conjurer Minterne lived during the 17th century and is said to have jump his horse right over the church from the hillside, and as he jumped he knocked off one of the pinnacles which was believed to have been replaced in 1906 and there is an official record that the church issued relating to the broken pinnacle. Other legends abound but there is a rock at the top of the hill which is supposed to have magical properties and called the Cross-in-Hand and reports of a hand holding a bowl out have been made murders have also been reported here . When Minterne did he said he did not want to be buried outside the church nor inside it, so he was buried half in and half out! Minternes Folly was a cottage that was used as a home for the poor and Poor Lot is where the poor were allowed to cut firewood in the area. |
