| Burton Bradstock |
| Nestling in the Bride Valley is Burton Bradstock and
here the Rive Bride wends its way to the sea. The village is situated at
the western end of the great Chesil Bank and you way to the bank you can
see the river on one side of the street. This is a lovely little
postcard village which hidden behind thatched cottages and The
Three Horseshoes Inn is a maze of narrow little streets with some lovely
colourful cottages that were built in local stone, also here are some
brick fronted Georgian houses. The church is dedicated to St Mary and dates back to the late 14th early 15th century though it has had some refurbishment over the years. The church clock once stood in Newgate Street and belonged to Christ's Hospital. The village gets its name from Brideton which means 'the farm on the Bride' and Bradenstoke which is believed points to the priory which owned the village during the mediaeval period. The other pub here is the Dove Inn which is just over the river. Smuggling used to go on here, as the beaches here were said to be owned by Isaac Gulliver who hailed from Bournemouth and he used to unload his contraband here and he bought a farm at the base of Eggardon Hill. |
