Fleet

Fleet lies on the shore of the Fleet Lagoon on the landward side of the great Chesil Bank and in 1824 a storm destroyed the promenade at Weymouth and flooded Abbotsbury to a depth of around 20 feet.

The 95ton Ebenezer was tossed over the top of the bank and dragged down into the lagoon and only two lives were lost, she was then towed into Weymouth.

There was a devastating fire reported in the 1920s that the cottages here but one did survive and the others were later rebuilt.
Buttery Street was washed away and most of the church with it and the Countess of Ilchester donated food and clothing to those who had lost everything
