Holdenhurst
Some people refer to Holdenhurst as the Mother of Bournemouth but this charming little village that sleeps on the banks of the Stour, was once a part of Hampshire until the 1974 boundary changes when it was handed over to Dorset. Today though it is a town and has grown considerably and seems joined to Bournemouth complete with housing estates, shops and industrial area and a new road buiot in 1969 that cuts off a part of the village. Known to the Saxons as Hollywood it was a peaceful place.

It was once re corded that the name was Holeest which came from the Old English word for holly 'holegn' and hyrst which meant copse. But it has also been spelt as Holehurstm Holhurst, Hollehurs, Holenehurst, and alsoHolnest..

There are some handsome houses here which include Magdelen Cottage built in 1697 and   these are  around the green some even thatched   and also there is a lepers hospital  used to be here.

Holdenhurst is roughly four miles from Bournemouth but it seems there is no break in the surrounding so it seems to be all one place. the church of St John the Evangelist is modern by  Dorset standards and was opened in 1833.
