This is a tiny secluded hamlet that is just a few cottages, manor house and a church in the Cerne Valley. Basically it is a working farm and estate that has been working here since Neolithic times and during the 19th century it was a thriving agricultural community with 2 mills and a forge among the water meadows, these and a couple of barns are now in ruins but there are some other buildings that are still in a fair state of repair. The farm has been used for filming on many occasions and it includes a large range of landscape and habitat including lakes, and a stream to various tyhpes of buildings both modern and old that are associated with the rural life.
The manor was built in the 16th and early 17th centuries and is of a Georgian design and the church is 13th to 15th century and is owned by a conservation group. In the Castletown Water Wheel Museum at Sherborne the old waterwheel from the mill here is on display and is probably the oldest 'all iron' one in the country. This whole area is now in a conservation area of natural beauty. source http://www.art-earth.org/landowners/southwest/nethercerne/nethercerne.html |
