Four miles north east of Bridport lies Powerstock or Poorstock which is a scattered village and has been here long before history was ever recorded its church dedicated to St Mary, sits high on a hill overlooking the village and dates back the Norman times. Outside the church is an extremely rare 13th century Dole Table from pre-Reformation times when charitable doles of bread were given out to eht needy and inside is a 15th century carving of a king and queen handing our bread to children. It is s aid that the mound the church is built on is all that is left of the castle of King Athelstan that was built to guard the valley. The tithings of South Poorton, West Milton and Nettlecombe are tithings in the parish and at West Milton was St Mary Magdalene's chapel of ease to Powerstock church and there was a Wesleyan chapel in the hamlet. |
