| Upwey |
| Upwey is where the River Wey begins, in
a valley above Weymouth and the source of the water became well known as
a wishing well tht became popular when Victorian visitors could alight
from the train at the Upwey Wishing Well Halt. The well was run by
a group of elderly ladies and a glass of the crystal clear spring water
from the Well was a must. Among the visitors here was King George III
who drank from a Gold cup which late became the Ascot Gold Cup that
featured in the racing world. Upwey also had a famous Member of Parliament at that time, he was Sir Christopher Wren the architect who designed St Paul's Cathedral in London. Broadway is so called because it is where the River Wey widens below Upwey and the ancient parish church is dedicated to St Nicholas. There have been several spelling of Upwey including Upway. The church was b uilt in the 15th century and there are some lovely views of Portland from here. |
