| Lying approximately four miles to the
south of Alton on the A32 amid large woods is Rotherfield park, the home
of the former Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, Sir James Scott Bt, which
can be seen on high ground to the right of the road heading out of
Alton. The mansion is a mixture of Italian and Gothic architecture. Take
the turning opposite the main gate and you will come to the church
of St james which was largely rebuilt in 1846 and is renowned for the
fine monuments to the Norton family.
There used to be a station here as the village was on the Meon Valley railway line but this was closed down during the 195os and today the station is a private dwelling. The villages is a tidy place and most of the cottages were built to house the workers on the Rotherfield Park Estate.
