EAST TISTED
Lying approximately four miles to the south of Alton on the A32 amid large woods is Rotherfield park, the home of the former Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, Sir James Scott Bt, which can be seen on high ground  to the right of the road heading out of Alton. The mansion is a mixture of Italian and Gothic architecture. Take the turning opposite  the main gate and you will come to the church of St james which was largely rebuilt in 1846 and is renowned for the fine monuments to the Norton family.

There used to be a station here as the village was on the Meon Valley railway line but this was closed down during the 195os and today the station is a private dwelling. The villages is a tidy place and most of the cottages were built to house the workers on the Rotherfield Park Estate.

The National Gazeteer of 1868 shows East Tisted as.....
 

"EAST TISTED, a parish in the hundred of Selborne, county Hants, 5 miles S.W. of Alton. The village is situated on the road from Alton to Gosport and Portsmouth. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Winchester, value £350. The church is dedicated to St. James. There is a free school, erected in 1837, with an endowment of £50 per annum. J. Groves, the astronomer, was born here.

"ROTHERFIELD, a tything in the parish of East Tisted, lower half division of Selborne hundred, county Hants, 4½ miles S.W. of Alton. It is situated on the road from Alton to Gosport, and contains the hamlets of Heards and Holtham. Rotherfield Park is a modern residence."

 

A local villager named Isaac Bone was born in the village and lived to the year 1893 a grand old age of 105 and it is said that he celebrated h is birthday by ring three of the church bells at once with one in each of his hands and the other tied to his foot!
