THE HISTORY OF St Mary's CHURCH,
LONGSTOCK

The church of St Mary, Longstock

The Church of St Mary, Longstock, was built in 1880 on the site of a much older church, which in its turn was built to replace a still earlier church on the same site.
Fragments from both these have been preserved in the present building e.g: Thirty six encaustic tiles of 15th century workmanship have been re-laid behind the altar, similar to those found at Glastonbury.

The top of the altar is of Sicilian marble. The oak formed part of the roof of the former church and the centre panel came from the roof of Salisbury  Cathedral.
Neither are less than 700 or 800 years old probably.

The font (believed 14th century)
Old stem of a font in Sanctuary
Altar Rails (about 1600)
Old Holy Water stoup in vestry also two carved angels in stone (circa 15th century)
And two 15th century stone bosses with figures and a 13th century lancet window head.
The north window in the vestry is from the north wall of the old church.
There is an ancient coffin lid set in the floor of the N.E corner of the nave where the War Memorial Book rests on the old clerk's desk.
