NEWTOWN. near Bishop's Waltham, is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1851 from the civil parishes of Soberton and Hambledon, 5 miles from Bishop's Waltham, in the Northern division of the county, Droxford union and Bishop's Waltham county court district, and rural deanery of Bishop's Waltham, and archdeaeonry and diocese of Winchester. The church of the Holy Trinity is built of flint and stone, it was erected in 1850, and has a chancel and nave. The register dates from 1850. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £168 with 10 acres of glebe, in the gift of William Gamier, esq., but is now vested in t e hands of three trustees, and held by the Rev. William Alien, M.A., of Hertford College, Oxford. There is a National mixed school. The Rev. J. C. Minehin is lord ot the manor. The principal landowner is John Carpenter-Gamier, esq., M.P. The population in 1871 was 650. |
