Thomas Helm Rutherford 24059, 3rd NZ Machine Gun Coy was a patient
after being badly wounded 26/5/1918 in the first World War. According to his 1918 diary (Some extracts below) he arrived at Brockenhurst 19th June 1918.
   
22/6/1918 "Feeling better This is some place and ideal place for a Hospital"
25/6/1918 "Am taken outside now on my bed under the trees"
30/6/1918 "The Dr started looking for something with his instruments"
1/7/1918 "Got the flu, feel rotten"
4/7/1918 "Have the Dr tapping every day still"
6/7/1918 "Had an operation somewhere about this time Abscess on the chest"
7/7/1918 "Not too good"
11/7/1918 "on the improve, my appetite starts to be OK"
20/7/1918 " Another week gone and still in bed but am quite happy, perhaps I should be
when I know that will soon be boing home"
27/7/1918 "Went out in a chair for the first time, had afternoon tea in the village, quite a
thrilling time. A decent day"
28/7/1918 "Went out for tea with the Nurse"
31/7/1918 "left Blighty for Home sorry to leave it all"
