The following
information was kindly contributed by
Ken Treanor Capt (rtd)
RNZAMC
Curator of the Royal New Zealand Army Medical Corps Museum, which
is
based at Burnham Camp, just outside of Christchurch
"Our Medical Corps had 4 major hospitals
overseas during WW1, No.1 in Brockenhurst, No.2 at Walton on
Thames, No.3 at Codford and a Stationary Hospital at Wisques in
France. There were also several convalescent and rest homes at
various locations. However 1 Gen Hosp was the biggest and handled
many thousands of young New Zealand troops who were sick or
wounded in France. It started out in New Zealand as 2 NZ
Stationary Hospital commanded by Lt Col W.H Parkes and
sailed for Egypt from NZ on 12 June 1915. It arrived on 24 July
and took over an Egyptian Army Hospital of 612 beds at Pont de
Koubbeh Cairo. Later the unit was renamed 1 NZ General Hospital
and moved from Egypt to the UK where it was located at
Brockenhurst where it remained until the end of the War. It has a
fine history, and any items of interest would be welcome at our
Museum."

Ethel Swayne NZ ANSC was born 27 October
1883 to Robert and Catherine Swayne of 'The Oaks', Fencourt. Ethel
qualified at Waikato Hospital in 1912 and enlisted 2 December 1915. On 4
December 1915 Ethel took up duties on the Hospital Ship Marama.
She left New Zealand 21 January 1916 and sent a cable home on 22 May
saying "Arrived at Alexandria 16 instant quite well". Then in July she
spent a month in Brockenhurst Hospital with rheumatic fever.
Ethel returned in October spending three weeks furlough at Fencourt and
while home attended a talk on the Red Cross, given by Mrs Parkes at the
Cambridge Town Hall. She was then appointed to the military hospital at
Trentham. In May 1917, Ethel spent another ten days furlough at Fencourt
and on 22 September was off on the Marama again for duty
overseas. She arrived home just after Christmas, returning overseas a
month later. On 6 April 1918 Ethel was promoted to Staff Nurse while on
duty at Brockenhurst and on 3 December promoted again to Sister. She
embarked on the Willochra on 8 March, arriving in New Zealand
on 15 April 1919.
On leaving the army Ethel was appointed Matron of the Te Kuiti Hospital
and then the Whangarei Hospital. She continued nursing and during WW11
she was Commandant of the Cambridge Voluntary Aid Detachment, enlisting
again in the Army with the rank of Captain.

When the First World War broke out,
Acland, who had joined the New Zealand Medical Corps in May 1913,
offered his services and was appointed senior surgeon to No 1 New
Zealand Stationary Hospital with the rank of major. He was in Egypt
until October 1915 when his unit was sent to Salonika in the
Marquette. On 23 October, in the Gulf of Salonika, a German
submarine sank the ship with heavy loss of life, including 10 New
Zealand nurses. Acland was saved after some seven hours in the sea.
For the next five months Acland served in
Salonika. He then returned to Egypt from where, in June 1916, he went
with his unit to France, in time to assist with the sick and wounded
from the battle of the Somme. In 1916 Acland was appointed head of the
surgical division of No 1 New Zealand General Hospital at Brockenhurst,
England, and consulting surgeon to the New Zealand Expeditionary Force
with the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1917 a standing medical board
was established under Acland's presidency with headquarters at No 2 New
Zealand General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames. Acland was appointed a CMG
in 1917 and a CBE in 1919. He was said to have performed some 4,000
operations during the war.

| Further additions to the
list of officers. As with the nursing staff the officers
were posted to one or the other medical units from time
to time, so it was not unusual for an officer or a nurse
to have served in all three hospitals in the UK as well
as a spell in France. This list complete all the officers
as far as we know. |
