| Pennington is mainly a residential suburb of
Lymington and lies about a mile west of the town opposite the Isle of
Wight. The village is in the parish of the same name, and it have its
own schools and adult Education Centre. Previously it was a separate Parish and Manor and the house Yaldhurst has a connection with the Domesday Survey, two mediaeval mills at Efford and gordleston still exist and are also place names. The parish church of St Mark was built in 1860 and is the only chapel or church in Pennington, the mediaeval 'Priestlands' whatever it was has long since disappeard and the Milford and Pennington Parish Council were formed in 1894 and a separate Pennington Parish Council in 1911. But in 1932 the village was absorbed into Lymington Borough. The common which is nicknamed Donkey Town is in Upper Pennington, and how it got is name is through the large number of donkeys that used to graze here. St. Marks Church, Pennington Parish church, was built in 1860 and is still the only church or chapel in Pennington. The mediaeval "Priestlands" establishment (whatever it was) has long since disappeared. The Sportsman's Arms and teh Musketeer public houses are near to the church in the village centre. Priestlands Fields are the only bit of green left to separate Pennington from the town of Lymington.
The village is still an active place with a good sense of community spirit and there are quite a few small shops and businesses there. Fox Pond in the south has also got a few shops and there is still opportunities of work on local farms and boat building and fishing. Local celebrities include Commander Peter Ouvry who was the first person to disarm and dismantle a magnetic mine during the Second World War and he live at the Salterns. Another name to conjure with is Lord Lurgan who lives at Pennington House and twice a year he opens hgis grounds to the public in aid of charity. And finally Sir Thomas Beecham the famous conductor spent many years in Ramley House which is now a retirement home. IMAGES OF PENNINGTON
