Portsdown
Driving along the M27 motorway to Portsmouth you begin a steady climb not long after leaving Fareham this is the 120 metre high chalk escarpment known as Portsdown Hill with its spectacular views across Portsmouth Harbour to the Isle of Wight. It also has a very interesting military history as along the hill can be seen various strange looking buildings with all types of antennae sprouting from them, these are the Naval Forts. The area is also teeming in wildlife.

Portsdown is an ecclesiastical district that was formed from the parishes of Farlington, Widley and Wymering in 1870. Christ Church is a small neat stone building which was built by John Deverell. The Purbrook Industrial School was nearby and was founded for the care of 'destitute boys from Hampshire, Sussex and Wiltshire who had been exposed to vicious influences which were likely to lead to crime' and in 1875 there were a total of 58 boys here.
