| Quarley |
| Just to the southwest of Andover between
Amport and Grately and on the Wiltshire border is the parish of Quarley.
The village of this name lies near the northeast corner of the parish
and to the southwest is Quarley Hill which rises to a height of 561
feet. The Parish church of St Michael date back to Saxon times and it has three bells which are hug in a frame with a shingled roof, in the churchyard as it has no bell turret or Bellcote. The name of the village originates from the word 'lea' and Greatley is from 'great lea' and Quarley is from a quarter of the lea, The manor house was held by Earl Harold before the Norman conquest but in the Domesday Book it was assigned to William the Conqueror. The village no longer has its own pub as this was destroyed by a fire in the 1920s and as the most of the village was owned by the Marquis of Winchester the villagers were offered eith a new pub or a water supply, and so an artesian well was dug and a water tower put up, so if they need something a bit stronger they have to travel to Greatley .. |
