| Stratfield Turgis |
| Near to the home of Wellington at Strattfieldsaye
is Strattfield Turgis which also has a link with the Iron Duke. Lying at
the end of a secluded lane, near to a farm can be found a small church
that has dormer windows, a font that dates back to Norman times and a
chancel of brick that was built by local labour after a fire during the
18th century. The body of Wellington's groom, John Mears, sleeps near the porch, it was he who led Copenhagen the dukes horse in the funeral procession to St Paul's. He had served the Duke faithfully for around 33 years, living 20 years after his master and was a proud man who would remember the day they carried the Duke to his burial until his own death. |
