The name Tangley is Anglo-Saxon and the
earliest reference was in 1174 where it was called Tangelea meaning a
wood or clearing (leah) on a tongue of land. The parish includes
Hatherdean, Wildhern and Tangley village and not far away is the
Winchester to Cirencester Roman Road.
But Tangley has something that no other
village is the country has and that is a font which is unique. Saxon,
Norman and Tudor fonts are all over the county but here is one that is
made of lead, it is of a moderate size and has Tudor roses, thistles,
crowned sceptres and fleur-de-lys around it sides and it is one of only
38 fonts that are made of lead in the whole country and this particular
one is 350 years old.

| There are what seem
like large boulders scatter around the churchyard, but in fact
these are Sarsen stones and they can be found strewn across
Salisbury Plain and were used in the building of Stonehenge, but
nobody knows how they came to be here in Tangley. |
