| A short way from
Yarmouth and in a secluded spot off of the main road is the little
village of Thorley and its two churches.
The newer one has an ancient font
which once was in the older church and it sits on a squat pillar
and is said to be 700 years old.
All that remains of the older
church are a porch and buttresses belfrey near an old farm and a
cross can be seen over a gable and it looks like a barn with its
tiled roof. But this church was built during the 13th century.
The grave of Thomas Urry can be
seen on the floor of the church, he died on Christmas Day 1631 and
was a member of one of the oldest families on the island and a
brass witht he following inscription can be seen.
His aged years {almost) were twelve times seven,
He's called to keep his Christmas now in Heaven.
Near the door is an ancient stone coffin with a place for
the
sleeper's head, showing how long this church had been a
place of
prayer before it was put on one side and left
