| TOTLAND (Totland Bay) | ||||||
| The most western village on
the north coast is Totland and lies on the outskirts of Freshwater and
due to increases in population the two now meet, they even have similar
architecture which stems from the visitors from the mainland building
holiday homes here. Today though there are more islanders there and
there are schools shops and churches and Totland beach is very popular
and safe. Headen Warren a beautiful walking area lies to the west and here you can see some lovely views of the Solent, Alum Bay and the Needles Here also is where Tennyson lived and the church which has seven memorials of his family and the grave of his wife, the church has no more important treasures than other island churches, but it was built in the 19th century and is a Roman Catholic church. Weston Manor has a private chapel built by William Ward the theologian and a neighbour and friend of Tennyson. Near to Totland is the first British wireless station which was set up by Marconi in the 1900s and here he sent his famous transmission to a steamer at se on 6th November 1897 then the following year the first Marconigram was sent from here b y Lord Kelvin, the wireless station has long gone and in its place is a granite memorial.
