WESTON is a tithing and ecclesiastical district, formed in 1866 from the civil parish of St. Mary Extra, 81 miles from London, 2½ south-east from Southampton railway station, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Mansbridge, union of South Stoneham, petty sessional division, county court district and rural deanery of Southampton, archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester, It is situated on the east side of the river Itchen, at the southern extremity of the parish, between Netley and Woolston, and extends to Southampton Water. The church of the Holy Trinity is a stone building: it has a chancel, nave, and north aisle, tower with 3 bells, spire, porch, and organ, and was erected at the sole cost of the late Rev. Wm. Preston Hulton, M.A., who also built the school: the expense of the whole was about £5,000. The register dates from the year [ ].There is a Free school. Weston Grove was the seat of Frederick R. Bevan, esq. Thomas Chamberiayne, esq., of Cranbury Park, was lord of the manor and principal landowner. The population in 1871 was 244. |
