Wherwell

Not far from the Cirencester to Winchester Roman Road can be found the village of Wherwell, it is a pretty little village that still retains traces of a Saxon priory, some lovely old cottages and a church that even though it was rebuilt in Victorian times it still retains a lot of interest. The oldest treasure here being a Saxon cross.

Here also is a remarkable building, the Iremonger Mausoleum, that has some frightening faces and a line of shields and on one side can be seen some stonework that belonged to the old church.

If you follow the path through the churchyard you will find a beautiful garden which has two ancient stone coffins and an inscribed stone set in the wall in the 17th century which tells of the 'overacted zeal or avarice of King Henry' for it was he who destroyed the old priory that was here.
