Before leaving the Cathedral grounds, wander around looking at the memorials there for you will find some fascinating epitaphs.......

(The text is spelt as it is on the memorial)

"In Memory of Thomas Thetcher a Grenadier in the North Regt. of Hants Militia who died of a violent Fever contracted by drinking Small Beer when hot the 12 May 1764.  Aged 26 years.

In grateful remembrance of whofe univerfal good will towards his Comrades.  this stone is Placed here  at their expence as a fmall testimony of their regard and concern.  Here fleeps in peace a Hampshire Grenadier who caught his death by drinking cold small Beer.
Soldiers be wise from his untimely fall and when yere hot drink Strong or none at all.

This memorial being decay'd was reftored by the officers of the Garrifon AD 1781.
An honeft Soldier never is forgot whether he die by mufket or by Pot.
The Stone was replaced by the North Hants Militia when difembodied at Winchester on 26th April 1802 in confequence of the original stone being deftroyed.

And again replaced by the Royal Hampshire Regiment 1966"

NOTE: the last paragraph mentions the North Hants Militia being "difembodied" - this means disbanded.

The Eclipse Inn, The Square
The inscription above the door reads:

"The Eclipse Inn
St Lawrence church   - rectory of the - sixteenth century"

  The White Horse Inn now a shoe shop, note the black boot hanging on the right hand side

The Square, the tower is the Church of St Lawrence which is tucked away in an alleyway.
The Plaque by the door states:

"The Church of St Lawrence
Built upon the site of the Chapel Royal of
the Palace of  William the Conqueror"
