WINKTON
Winkton gets its name from Werringtone as shown in the Domesday Survey of 1086, and it dates back to the time England was created as a nation and it is thought to be named as it is to show it was the spoils of a battle between the Saxons and Vikings centuries earleir.

The village lies where the road to Ringwood and Christchurch and the road to Bransgore meet and what was the upper limit to navigation on the Avon. During World War II there was an airfield here where the 404th US Airforce was based.

Today the village is in Hampshire.

And the pub - The Fisherman's Haunt -  is now a popular spot for fishermen and it is the former home of Holmsfield School which was famed for its school orchestra. The village looks out over the River Avon from the same spot of where the airfield was, and there are some splendid views across to the church at Sopley, St Catherine's Hill and Christchurch
