.WOODMANCOTE is a village and parish, about 4 miles south-east from Micheldever station, 9 south-west from Basingstoke, and 10 north-east from Winchester, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Holdsbott, petty sessional division, union, and county court district of Basingstoke, diocese and archdeaconry of Winchester, and rural deanery of Alresford. The church of St. James is a small handsome edifice, erected in 1855, at a cost of £1,200, raised by subscription: it is of flint, with stone dressings, and has chancel and nave, south porch, vestry on the north, and small open stone belfry over the west end, containing 1 bell. The resistor dates from 1762. The Warden and Fellows of Winchester College are lords of the manor. The population in 1871 was 87. |
